Six colleges and universities in San Diego offer foreign language degree programs, including San Diego City College which offers programs in foreign languages, French and Spanish. San Diego State University offers programs in classical languages, French, German, Japanese, linguistics, Russian and Spanish.
The future employment outlook is very strong for the San Diego area. The overall employment rate is projected to increase by 18% through the year 2012. Employment opportunities for interpreters and translators are expected to grow by 22% during the same time period. Jobs for bilingual, foreign language and ESL educators are expected to grow by 19%.

San Diego has a large population of people for whom English is not their first language. Approximately 27% of the residents in San Diego were not born in the United States. The majority of these are from Latin American countries with a smaller percentage from Asian nations. This percentage is predicted to continue growing. This will result in more employment opportunities in the future. Internships and volunteer opportunities with businesses and non-profit groups in the city allow students to prepare for a foreign language career.
